3 New Features That are Affecting the Way We Use Facebook

Tagged in Facebook, Hathway, Social Media, Tips and Tools Posted in: Blog, Web Design, Web Marketing

Facebook is constantly evolving – new apps, new platforms, and new pages seem to have a never-ending multiplication rate. It can be difficult to wade through all the muck to find what is actually pertinent for business development. We went knee deep in the muck of three new features, so you wouldn't have to.

1. Admin Only Friend Suggestions

At Hathway, the “Suggest to Friends” button is one we press often. It is a great way to scout potential fans and spread the word about our company and our clients. This week we noticed that the “Suggest to Friends” feature is now reserved only for page administrators. This was followed by a lot of puzzled faces, a few curse words and a big question mark looming over Hathway.

What does this mean for Facebook company promotion in the future? Do we need to be interviewing fans to be potential admins? Can we limit their administrator abilities to strictly suggesting to friends and nothing else? These and other questions are now the hot Facebook topic for us and other companies that have relied on our fans spreading our brand via the “Suggest to Friends” button.

2. To Be or Not To Be, that is the Facebook Question

The Q&A format is nothing new to the world wide web, but bringing it into the Facebook community has added a new twist to the old “ask and you shall receive” mantra, online.

Facebook Questions has the potential to be revolutionary to small businesses. It opens the doors wide for fans to see how much a company knows about its subject. Facebook Questions allows you to answer the questions as a business. Providing relevant and helpful content with your company as the brains behind it will push readers to your company page rather than to an employee’s personal page.

To facilitate more interaction, your company can also ask questions that will appear on your page as well as your fan’s newsfeeds. Instead of relying on status posts to get the conversation going, you can directly engage your readers.

Facebook Questions is still under wraps so now’s the time to jump in and start the asking and answering trend.

3. Photos are Still Worth a Thousand Words

Photos continue to get the most hits on Facebook pages and the new Facebook profile allows us to take full advantage of that. What makes it even easier to make the most of the updated profile is the Schweppes Profile app. By 'liking' the Schweppes page, anyone can showcase his or her creativity in an easy three-step process. The crucial step is tagging yourself in the five photos that display horizontally across your profile.

These engaging photos can easily draw the eyes of many to the page, but don’t get too excited. Because the app only works with the use of tagged photos, there is no way for a company to utilize the new profile for all its worth. The Schweppes Profile app would draw in big numbers for company pages, but for now companies can only encourage their employees to use the new profile.

Not all of these features are beneficial to business Facebook Pages, but what affects users affects business. Keeping up to date on all social media trends is crucial to a successful social media campaign.
